A lot of managers try to psychoanalyze their directs. Don't bother. We're all terrible at it.
Most of us managers think we're good at understanding our directs, and learning 'what makes them tick'. We think we can figure them out, and that will give us the keys to be able to motivate them, and unlock their true potential. But the fact is, we are all horrible at it. It's ineffective, and above our abilities. We shouldn't bother trying.
