BLUF: Asked to hire the candidate who came in second for the new role I was just appointed to
I’ve just come through a hiring process for a head of dept role and have been appointed tot he position. I will be joining the company in 4 or 5 weeks.
I have since been asked to interview another candidate who came second in the process, and who the company would like to hire as my deputy.
The candidate is available immediately, and if I were to agree, they would start a number of weeks ahead of me.
As this would be essentially my first hire, should I ask that the company defer their start date until I start? The associated risk is that we lose them to another company given their availability. I they are a good hire, potentially a great addition to the team.
