I'm probably going to be kicked off the forum for the unprofessionalism of suggesting this, but I recently verbally accepted an offer from a small firm which I've been talking with on and off for 4 months.

And I really regret it.  I love the work and I love the people, but I did some soulsearching and realized I'm terrified of the travel and not controlling my schedule.  I was a fool and thought to myself that in the best case scenario I could handle it, without thinking through the worse case scenario.  For me the question is if its better to just renege tomorrow on phone, or wait until I can do so in person next week?  The firm is small, so I imagine time is an issue for them so they can handle client flow.

If you're sure you don't want to take the job tell them now by phone.  Appologise profusely but tell them now.
Delaying telling them would be unprofessional and may well cost them money (either directly or due to commitments they've made in the expectation of you being available).

My comment would have been -  do what is best for you, do it quickly, and know that you have probably burnt a bridge.  But, of course, there are always new bridges to be built so move on.
Good luck!
